Military history tours have long been
popular with foreign travelers, and tour organizations and informal
groups have proliferated in recent years. We have good
recommendations for companies that organize excellent package tours to
hundreds of battlefields in every corner of the globe--literally.
Our military history tours tend to be a bit different. Hunt
Tooley, the silent (well, sort of) partner in History Tours, is a
historian who
for many years has written and taught history related to war and
revolution in the twentieth century. He began taking student
groups to historical sites in the 1980s, and he has organized and led
many tours, of both college students and adults, devoted to World
War I, World War II, and many other conflicts since the Renaissance,
including battlefields and museums in Virginia.
He is particularly interested in developing understanding about
connections between war and society, and his tours are somewhat
atypical of military history tours in that his study groups focus not
only on battlefields but also on cemeteries and museums and other kinds
of artifacts that tell us about the broader issues of war and
society. At the same time, he does not neglect the great generals
and the soldiers who fought
in the trenches (as well as the trenches themselves).
He will be traveling to Scotland and Ireland during 2005 to explore
these kinds of connections in the long and tempestuous history of the
British Isles.
Upcoming also is a trip to the Western Front of World War I. More
information will be forthcoming soon at this site.
